The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has expressed his concerns and urged President Bola Tinubu to reject the idea of establishing state police.

According to Oba Akanbi, the implementation of state police could potentially lead to a civil war, as some state actors may disregard the authority of the Federal government.

In a statement released on Monday, May 20, the Oluwo emphasized that autocratic governors might abuse the system and disrupt the current cooperation among state authorities.

Oba Akanbi further explained that the consequences of state policing could be dire, as it would undermine the exclusive legislative power of the federal government on security matters.

Instead, he suggested that President Tinubu focus on recruiting more police officers and improving the welfare package of the Nigerian Police Force.

The Oluwo emphasized that policing is a responsibility that falls under the exclusive legislative list of the federal government.

Introducing state police would disrupt the existing peace and cooperation among Nigerian state authorities, and therefore, he believes that Nigeria is not yet ready for such a system.
