The wife of the Olu of Warri, Olori Atuwatse III, emphasized the importance of promoting positive cultural and traditional values in Africa to solidify the continent’s identity. She highlighted the efforts made by her husband to challenge negative traditional beliefs that perpetuate feelings of inferiority among certain groups.
Olori stressed the significance of upholding African identity with dignity and pride during her speech at the 14th African Achievers Awards in the United Kingdom. She underscored the impact that stories and narratives have on shaping perceptions and called for collective action to redefine Africa’s image globally.
Through the establishment of Elevate Africa, Ogiame Atuwaste III and Olori Atuwatse III aimed to harness African ingenuity to address challenges and offer solutions for the continent and beyond. Olori encouraged other change-makers to unite and advocate for a positive narrative that celebrates Africa’s rich cultural heritage and diversity.
The necessity for unity, collaboration, and a unified voice on the global platform was emphasized, shifting the focus from what Africa does not desire to articulating the aspirations and desires of the continent and its people.
During the event, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, was honored with the Leadership & Community Development awards by Baroness Verma, a distinguished member of the British House of Lords.
Verma commended Africans for taking charge of narrating their own stories authentically, rather than conforming to external perceptions.
Among the recipients were Visu Thembekwayo, the founder/CEO of MyGrowth Fund venture partner in South Africa, Caleb Muftwang, the Governor of Plateau State, recognized for Excellent & Outstanding Leadership, and Dr. Rex Idaminabo, the organizer of Africa Achievers Awards.
Additional awardees included Moses Bliss in the Excellence in Contemporary Music category, Abena Opong-Asane, Minister for Implementation in the United Kingdom, Sam Shivute, Chairman of Namibia Revenue Agency, and Member of Parliament for Mafinga Constituency in Zambia.
