Ifeanyi Okowa, former governor of Delta State, responds publicly for the first time after his detention by the EFCC, addressing the charges and his next steps.
Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has strongly refuted claims of participating in fraudulent activities after his recent detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement issued by his media aide Olisa Ifeajika, Okowa clarified that the EFCC has not yet provided any concrete evidence against him.
The former governor directly responded to allegations of misappropriating N1.3 trillion from oil derivation funds, describing the claims as “ludicrous” and “outlandish.”
Okowa stated that he visited the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office of his own accord to clear his name in response to petitions from what he described as “disgruntled elements.” He stressed his full willingness to cooperate with the investigation and resolve the issue.

“The EFCC has not made any case against Dr. Okowa,” he declared, emphasizing that the charges stem from “unverified claims” by individuals with “malicious, short-sighted, and biased” intentions. Okowa also noted that these allegations had previously been raised during his time as governor.
The former governor also denied allegations of misappropriating state resources. These accusations included claims that he acquired an 80% stake in Premium Trust Bank and diverted funds for housing estates in Asaba and Abuja, as well as two hotels.
Okowa highlighted his dedication to maintaining transparency and integrity throughout his tenure in office.
As the EFCC inquiry continues, Okowa emphasized that he has nothing to conceal and remains committed to pursuing justice and clarification.
