Ogun State Issues Flood Alert, Urges Residents in Wetland Areas to Relocate

The Ogun State Government has issued a strong advisory to residents living in wetland areas to relocate to safer ground before the rainy season begins.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) have predicted that the rain will start in March and last until December 2024, with an average rainy period of 239 days and an average precipitation of 1786.5mm.

This will affect sixteen out of the twenty local government areas in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, emphasized the importance of taking precautionary measures, especially for those living in hilly areas who may experience erosion due to the speed of the water.

The state government is working on implementing measures to mitigate the impact of the heavy rainfall, but residents are urged to either relocate or elevate their homes to minimize damage.
