The Ogun State Government’s ‘DapoCNG Bus’, or compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered buses, started running in the Mowe-Ibafo-Berger Lagos axis of the state on Monday.

The buses are to run ahead of the installation of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) along the axis, according to Mr Gbenga Dairo, the state commissioner for transportation.

They would run from Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The buses would stop at Mowe, Ibafo, Magboro, Arepo, and the New Garage in Berger.

Transport costs on the CNG-powered buses, according to Mr. Dairo, can go up to N400.00.

According to the commissioner, all agreements required for a smooth launch of the programme have been reached with all parties involved, including local government representatives and transport unions.

“Commuters highly value the timing of the start of operations with Christmas activities at the RCCG camp, and expectations are fairly high.”

“Passengers travelling along that axis are encouraged to use these buses as they offer an endearing, smooth, and cost-effective travel experience,” Dairo stated.

With the launch of 17 converted vehicles in the first scheme on October 30, Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the deployment of CNG technology and E-mobility as a better alternative and feasible means of transportation in the Gateway State. He claimed that this was a cost-effective transportation system with minimal environmental impact and a direct response from his administration designed to lessen the negative effects of fuel “subsidy removal” on commuters’ transport costs in the state.

He stated that other towns and cities in the state will be included in the plan, which began along the Adatan to Ita-Oshin corridor in the Abeokuta metropolis.
