Kunle Oluomo, the former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, has been removed from his position through impeachment. During a plenary session on Tuesday, 18 out of the 26 members of the State Assembly voted in favor of his impeachment.

The reasons cited for his removal include allegations of embezzlement of funds, highhandedness, and other related offenses. Following the impeachment, Oludaisi Elemide was elected as the new Speaker.

In his inaugural speech, the new Speaker called for calm among the members and clarified that the impeachment was not aimed at the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, as some had speculated. He emphasized that the members have the constitutional right to elect their leaders in the House.

The House subsequently adjourned the plenary for a period of two weeks, with the new Speaker assuming possession of the maze, which symbolizes the authority of the House. It is worth noting that prior to his impeachment, Oluomo had been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges of money laundering amounting to N2.475bn.

He was arraigned alongside three others: Oladapo Samuel, Adeyemo Taiwo, and Adeyanju Nimota Amoke, who is currently at large. The charges against them include conspiracy, forgery, stealing, and money laundering.

The court was informed by Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), the prosecution counsel of the EFCC, that the defendants were accused of committing the alleged offences during the period of 2019 to 2022. Additionally, Oyedepo stated that the incident occurred in Ogun State.

Furthermore, Oyedepo informed the court that the defendants had unlawfully taken the amount of N2.475bn from the treasury of the Ogun State House of Assembly. Despite the ongoing trial, Oluomo was granted bail.
