The Nigeria Customs Service’s Ogun 1 Area Command has detained at least 15 alleged smugglers (NCS).

The suspects were detained by members of the NCS at various sites throughout the State, according to Bamidele Makinde, the Controller of the Command.

Makinde claims that they were apprehended at various exit points carrying contraband such as imported parboiled rice, used cars, petroleum products, cannabis sativa, used clothing, bags, shoes, and tyres.

According to the NCS director, some of the detained suspects are currently in court being prosecuted while others have been given administrative bail.

“The Command detained 15 alleged drug traffickers. They were detained carrying illegal products at several locations and departure points in Ogun State.

While some of them were given administrative bail and have not yet been brought before a judge, others were brought before a judge for prosecution, according to Makinde.

The Controller went on to say that Customs agents are given the authority to detain, arrest, and punish anyone who commit crimes relating to customs, such as smuggling, under Section 8 of CEMA CAP C45 LFN of 2004.

He continued by saying that the NCS was authorised by law to patrol, inspect properties, and search anyone.
