As protests loom on October 1, police reinforce key areas amid tensions between the APC and opposition parties. Discover the details of the brewing political clash and security measures in place.

According to findings by OBASANJONEWS, the Nigeria Police National Command has deployed personnel to hotspots as organizers of the October 1 protest insist that the Independence Day demonstration go ahead as scheduled.

If the protest goes ahead, it will be the second time in two months that angry Nigerians have taken to the streets to denounce the hardships in the country caused by the government’s hike in petrol and electricity prices and the devaluation of the naira sparked by President Bola Tinubu.

According to the organizers, the #FearlessOctober1 demonstration is a continuation of the #Endbadgovernance protests that took place from August 1 to 10. They added that the recent demonstrations were necessitated by the federal government’s failure to meet their demands, which include hunger in the country, rising hunger costs, insecurity, government waste, electoral reforms and human capital development.

The group explained that the FCT protest will take place at Eagle Square, the same venue as the Independence Day parade, while the Lagos protest will take place at Ikeja Underbridge.

On Sunday, human rights activist and protest leader Omoyele Sowore said they were “fully prepared” for the protests, adding that they would take to the streets at 7am on the scheduled day.

“We are fully prepared, our organisers are on the ground and we will not hide. This is revolutionary time and Nigerians will be taking to the streets en masse from 7am on October 1,” he said.

In Lagos, protest organisers plan to start the march from Ikeja Underbridge at 7:30am.
