A week following the tragic murder of military personnel in Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers in the state regarding the protection of suspects involved in the incident.
The incident, which occurred in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area, resulted in the loss of seventeen military personnel, including a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and thirteen soldiers. This devastating blow to the country’s military has prompted authorities to intensify their efforts in resolving the matter.
Governor Oborevwori, during a meeting with traditional rulers at the State Traditional Rulers’ Council Secretariat in Asaba, emphasized the importance of cooperation in the ongoing investigations. He stressed that Delta State upholds the principles of the rule of law and human decency, and no kingdom should provide refuge to those responsible for such a heinous act.
Furthermore, the governor assured the traditional rulers that President Tinubu and the military authorities have guaranteed the safety of innocent citizens in the state. He expressed his firm stance against any form of victimization and urged the traditional rulers not to conceal or protect any individuals involved in the killing of the soldiers.
“We will not tolerate this. Such an incident has never occurred in our state, where one lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and thirteen soldiers were killed. We must identify and apprehend those responsible,” Governor Oborevwori stated.
He concluded by reiterating the assurance given by the Chief of Army Staff and the President, emphasizing that innocent individuals will not face any repercussions unless they collude with the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
