Obono-Obla: Recovered Loot Under Buhari Went Back to Looters
Okoi Obono-Obla, the former Chairman of the Special Investigation Panel, SPIP, for the Recovery of Public Property, has made a revelation regarding the recovered loot during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. This disclosure was made during an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on Mic On Podcast on Saturday.
Obono-Obla expressed his frustration with the level of corruption within the Nigerian system, citing obstacles he faced in bringing looters to justice. He specifically mentioned the former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and other officials within the same administration as being responsible for hindering his efforts.

The former presidential aide revealed that some of the recovered items were returned to the looters, highlighting a case involving over 80 brand new X-class Mercedes Benz cars (armoured plated) recovered from Jabi, Abuja. Despite his efforts to ensure that the appropriate customs duties and taxes were paid, he faced resistance from various government agencies and officials. This sheds light on the challenges faced by the Special Investigation Panel in fulfilling its mandate to recover Nigeria’s looted assets.
