Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, expressed concern about the high level of insecurity in Nigeria and urged for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, other detained freedom fighters, and remaining #EndSARS protesters. Speaking to reporters in Onitsha on Saturday, Obi emphasized the importance of government’s role in ensuring the security of citizens and warned that failure to address the situation could lead to the country’s downfall.

He also called for greater collaboration among leaders, particularly in the South-East, to address the security challenges and emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among the governors in the region. Additionally, Obi criticized the continued detention of Kanu despite being granted bail by the courts, stressing the importance of government’s adherence to the rule of law.

The principle of the rule of law is a complex asset that we must value and uphold. I take this chance to urge the government to ensure the release and dialogue of all individuals in similar circumstances. In a democracy, we should refrain from arbitrary actions that fall outside the boundaries of the law.

We live in a democratic nation where citizens have the right to freely express themselves as guaranteed by the Constitution. Peaceful protests are also a right that we must acknowledge and listen to. It is essential to pay attention to those who voice their discontent, as this is the essence of democracy. It is imperative that we refrain from authoritarian behavior and instead embrace the principles of democracy.
