Yunusa Tanko, the spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, has bemoaned the Supreme Court’s indifference to the party’s repeated appeals.
The Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar and the Liberal Party’s Peter Obi filed complaints challenging President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election on February 25. The cases were dismissed by the top court, which was convened in Abuja on Thursday.
Tanko responded to the ruling by saying, “As far as we are concerned, we have brought out our cases beyond reasonable doubt, but the court chose to look at the other side and turn a deaf ear to our plea.” Tanko spoke with our correspondent over the phone on Thursday. And they’ve made up their mind.
“As democratic people, we will not act in any other way. Instead, we shall take our case before the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s populace and public. They are able to evaluate this verdict in light of their current circumstances and the legitimacy of the enthroned leadership.
“We’ll continue to be law-abiding and adhere to democratic norms,” Tanko continued. Remember that in a democratic society, people are free to voice their opinions if they believe they are being offended. We have so done our part and will now turn this specific matter over to the people.
He maintained that the party’s request for Tinubu’s disqualification was motivated by their opinion that he was unfit to contest for office.
“We also made a plea regarding the interpretation of the Federal Capital Territory’s 25% qualification,” he continued.
“We also made an appeal regarding the matter of the procedures that INEC adhered to in accordance with the Electoral Act, but it was all ignored.”
The spokesperson went on to say that Obi would soon make announcements regarding his political future.
