Obasanjo Reveals Why Nigeria Is Not Difficult to Govern
Former President Obasanjo explains his views on Nigeria’s governance, arguing that the country is not as difficult to manage as it may seem, with effective leadership being key.
During a memorial lecture in tribute to the late Akintola Williams, former President Olusegun Obasanjo discussed Nigeria’s leadership situation and attributed its challenges to inadequate quality of leaders.
In Lagos, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) hosted an event entitled “Leadership Dynamics: Current Realities and Way Forward.”
Although governing Nigeria involves complexities, Obasanjo stressed that managing the country is not intrinsically arduous. He highlighted honesty and devotion to serving both the nation and its citizens as indispensable qualities for successful leadership.
Obasanjo emphasized that although Nigeria may be complicated, it is not an arduous nation to govern. He added that in order to lead proficiently, one must remain truthful with oneself, the country and their faith.

As he looked back on his time as the president, Obasanjo voiced satisfaction with how he guided the nation towards achieving economic stability. He emphasized that during his tenure, they were able to obtain debt forgiveness while also strengthening their monetary reserves.
He reminisced about the state of Nigeria’s finances when he took office, stating that there were only N3.7 billion in reserves and an expenditure of N3.5 billion to pay off debts. He recognized the necessity for debt relief which was subsequently obtained. During his tenure, Nigeria garnered over N25 billion in savings named “excess crude” while its reserve increased significantly to exceed 45 million nairas upon his departure from office.
Akintola Williams was acknowledged by Obasanjo for his valuable and noteworthy contributions to Nigeria’s political, social, and economic areas. As a highly respected individual in the accounting field, he earned kudos from Obasanjo for being an intelligent and committed public servant who strived towards excellence with integrity throughout his life.
The significance of emulating the outstanding leadership displayed by Williams was emphasized by ICAN President Davidson Alaribe in his speech. He urged those present to not only pay tribute to Williams through memorials, but also strive towards maintaining the lofty standards he held dear within their own vocations.
Alaribe urged us to pay tribute not only through plaques and statues, but also by committing daily to maintaining the standards he established. This involves turning every obstacle into an opportunity for elevation towards superiority.
Obasanjo’s reflections serve as a poignant reminder of the crucial role that honest and effective leadership plays in Nigeria’s progress, particularly during its ongoing struggle with leadership challenges.
