Former President Olusegun Obasanjo raises concerns over Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic challenges, urging swift and strategic reforms.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s socio-economic decline, former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo expressed renewed hope for the nation’s future.
In his keynote address at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum held over the weekend at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, Obasanjo expressed concern about the dire situation in Nigeria.
In a press release from his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former President delivered an address entitled “Leadership Failure and State Capture in Nigeria,” where he stated: “As immorality and corruption increase within a nation, it further descends into chaos marked by insecurity, conflict, discord, division, disunity; experiences higher rates of depression among its youth leading to restiveness; faces confusion and violence along with stunted development.”

Obasanjo, while in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), recorded a 25-minute video for the forum. He observed that in Singapore, “The government has effectively responded to its population’s evolving needs by making significant investments in healthcare, education, and social welfare.”
In Nigeria, during the era of Baba-go-slow and Emilokan, the country’s declining state is evident to anyone willing to see it. This decline is marked by widespread corruption, mediocrity, immorality, misconduct, mismanagement, perversion injustice incompetence ,and numerous other forms of iniquity. However there remains hope for improvement .
Regarding Achebe’s character, Obasanjo suggested that the renowned author has been recognized for “his work and his values since our nation’s inception. He was a great and distinguished Nigerian.”
