Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo criticized leaders who assume office without a clear strategy, urging them to commit more deeply to understanding the nation’s challenges.

In a recent interview with News Central Television, Obasanjo voiced his frustration towards leaders who act without fully understanding the complexities of Nigeria’s challenges.

Obasanjo, a retired general who guided Nigeria through military and civilian leadership phases, emphasized that a president should refrain from making uninformed remarks on crucial matters.

Alternatively, he contended that true leadership demands a comprehensive examination and analysis of issues in order to develop lasting solutions.

To tackle Nigeria’s distinct challenges, Obasanjo highlighted the need for solutions that are customized to address particular problems. He urged leaders to fulfill their roles with thorough preparation and a well-informed perspective.

He inquired, “What would you say about a Nigerian president who assumed office without a plan and suddenly declared, ‘Three-point plan’? What exactly are these three points, what do they aim to accomplish, and who were the individuals involved in developing it?”

“You arrive and simply start speaking about a topic you haven’t researched.”

Obasanjo stressed the importance of good governance, stating that “effective leadership should be valued and leveraged for positive outcomes.”

“Leadership isn’t something you come across by chance, and it’s not granted to everyone. Therefore, when we recognize it in someone, we should value it and leverage its potential effectively,” he added.

When I mention leadership, I’m referring to it not only in the political sphere but across all areas of life.

Whenever we encounter leadership, be it in the private sector or public sector, we should leverage that effective leader to reach optimal results.

The crux of the matter is that, regrettably, in Africa as a whole and specifically in Nigeria, progress often feels like taking two steps forward but then sidestepping or even reversing by two or three steps.

We should focus our attention on leadership.

Obasanjo served as the military head of state from 1976 to 1979 and later as a civilian president from 1999 to 2007.
