Impeached Lagos Speaker, Obasa, refutes corruption allegations and affirms his position as Speaker, despite recent controversies surrounding his leadership.

Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has labeled as “fictitious and unsubstantiated” the corruption allegations leveled against him.

During a welcome rally at his residence in GRA, Ikeja on Saturday, Obasa expressed that he was not concerned about the prospect of being impeached but stressed that proper procedures were not adhered to.

The previous speaker claimed that his removal was planned during his absence and accused the state police commissioner of facilitating it.

He stated that security officers, headed by the police commissioner, stormed both his homes in Agege and Ikeja as well as the assembly complex. During this operation, more than 200 officers were involved and his family was confined indoors.

Obasa denied accusations of misappropriation.

He ridiculed the assertions that building a gate had cost N16 billion by asking, “Is it like constructing the wall of Jericho?”

He stated, “I am not afraid of being removed. After all, it’s not my father’s chieftaincy title. I represent my people and have been re-elected six times by them. If you’re going to do something, make sure you do it well.”

“They carried out the removal solely due to my being out of the country. Lagos is unique, and we must not undermine its significance.”

The previous speaker referenced the case of Rt. Hon Jokotola Pelumi, who also previously held the position.

He mentioned that during Pelumi’s removal, he was present at the assembly and stated, “We did not summon any policemen.”

“When my sister, Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, the former Deputy Speaker of the House, was removed, we did not call in the police.”

Obasa stated that an innocent person should not be discredited, and there must be evidence supporting any allegations by clearly demonstrating what the individual has done.

The Lagos State House of Assembly surpasses the usual standards of excellence.

I am grateful to the members of the governance advisory council and Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. He considers me his younger brother, and I regard him as my elder brother.

On January 13, Obasa was impeached by over two-thirds of the members in the 40-member legislative house due to allegations of misconduct and various offenses.
