Obasa Absent From Plenary as Meranda, Lawmakers Present United Front
Lagos Assembly Speaker Obasa was absent from the latest plenary session, while Deputy Speaker Meranda and lawmakers showcased a united front amidst political tensions.
Despite insisting that he remained the speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly following his impeachment, Mudashiru Obasa was absent from Monday’s plenary session.
This occurred after Channels Television reported that the Assembly had directed its officials to present valid identity cards for access to the premises, indicating increased security measures at the complex.
A substantial number of police officers were present around the Assembly premises on Monday when Meranda officially took office as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Today’s plenary marks the third session led by Meranda since Obasa’s removal, with the former speaker having been absent from the last two meetings.
During the plenary on Monday, 39 lawmakers, including the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda—everyone except Obasa—were seen assembling within the assembly premises for a group photograph.
The photograph aims to dispel rumors circulating about the house being divided after Obasa spoke out regarding his impeachment.
Over the weekend, the embattled former speaker asserted that he was still the speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
He contended that his impeachment lacked due process.
Meranda is anticipated to appoint chairmen today, who will lead standing committees responsible for overseeing the activities of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in Lagos State.
