OAU students block campus entrance in protest of the increase in tuition fees
On Tuesday, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife students demonstrated against the increase in tuition.
According to information provided to OBASANJO NEWS24, the protesting students are calling for a 50% decrease in the new fees.
The first planned instalment payment that the university’s vice chancellor pledged was demanded by the students who encouraged the Federal Government to use the money from subsidy elimination for education rather than permitting a rise in tuition.
According to OBASANJO NEWS24, the students also locked the institution’s main gate, preventing cars from entering the campus.
As a result, on Tuesday morning, university employees, faculty, and other interested parties were stuck at the campus gate.
The demonstration was organised following the student union convention on Monday, October 2, 2023, according to OBASANJO NEWS24.
In response to demands from the students regarding instalment payments, Kanmi Adewara, the Vice-Chancellor’s representative in ICT, stated that it had not been enabled earlier due to a staffing shortfall.
“The current ‘Japa’ wave has resulted in a low staffing level at the school’s ICT centre, which has slowed down the activation of the instalment payment on the portal.
He stated, “I guarantee that the installment payment will be triggered by the end of business today.
