The tuition prices that students at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, must pay have been revised by the university’s administration.

Abiodun Olarewaju, the university’s public relations officer, announced this in a statement on Monday.

The institution’s management had announced an increase in tuition costs for all faculties at the beginning of September.

The institution’s students were not pleased with the increase and promised to fight it in court.

The decision, according to Olarewaju, was made when the university administration met with the Students’ Union leadership on Monday, September 25, 2023.

The conference, which lasted for several hours, was called by university management, per the statement, following repeated student union protests calling for a decrease of the first prices authorised by the university.

“The University management made it plain that the increased charges were the very minimum the University needed to operate effectively, notwithstanding the Students’ Union leaders’ insistence that they be slashed by 50%.

Accordingly, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, Vice Chancellor, graciously declared that the charges initially published had been decreased as follows:

“The first sundry charges of N89,200 for Humanities students have been cut to N76,000 for returning students, while the initial fees of N151,200 for new Humanities students have been decreased to N13,000.

“For those studying in the sciences and technology, the starting fee of N101,200 has been reduced to N86,000 for returning students, and to N141,000 for new students in the same faculties, down from the initial N163,200.

“In a same vein, the Pharmacy and College of Health Sciences returning students will now pay N109,000 instead of N128,200. The initial fees of N190,000 have been reduced to N164,000 for new students in the same faculties.

While announcing that students may now make payments through the university portal, Olarewaju also said that the university administration had approved splitting the payment into two equal installments.
