To promote national unity and its various cultures and customs, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) held its first-ever cultural funfair in Akwa Ibom.
During the event at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Vamp in the Nsit Atai Local Government Area for the 2023 Batch ‘B’ stream II corps members, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Chinyere Ekwe, revealed this on Saturday.
Ekwe claimed that the carnival’s goals were to unite the corps members and promote Nigeria’s unity.
The vivid cultural funfair performance put on by several platoons, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), featured a variety of ethnic groupings.
The coordinator explained that the NYSC funfair fell on the host community’s festival day and that this would provide the corp members a chance to get to know their host communities’ cultures.
“The NYSC programme is a pathfinder in the promotion of Nigeria’s unity and integration, and it has led the charge in maintaining our rich cultural heritage.
“Therefore, the cultural funfair was introduced in the orientation course.
The Local Government Day Festival has been added to the event today so that the host communities can highlight their traditions.
“To have a successful year, it is crucial to have a thorough awareness of the host communities’ cultures and traditions. This is where the corps members will be deployed to serve.
“It is intended to dispel misinformation and prejudice and demonstrate the many similarities among Nigerians from all ethnic backgrounds.
Ekwe told the corps members, “My dear corps members, I wish to inform you that though our tradition may differ from one ethnic group to another, the operational norms and cultures are similar all over the state.”
In her remarks, Ms. Emem Ibanga, the head of the Nsit Atai Local Government Council, praised the NYSC for starting the cultural carnival during the orientation course.
According to Ibanga, the establishment of the cultural carnival for corps members would continue to encourage Nigerians of different ethnic backgrounds to come together and support national unity. (NAN)
