The Enugu State branch of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, or NULGE, has advised its members to look for alternate sources of support before leaving their jobs.
The counsel was given by Comrade Kenneth Ugwueze, State President of NULGE, to employees of the Udi Local Government.
Ugwueze and his crew have been touring the State’s 17 council districts to educate residents on the importance of getting ready for life after retirement.
Due to the dire economic condition in the nation, the union, according to e, was worried for the wellbeing of its members.
Enugu State Local Government Workers Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society’s registration as part of NULGE’s assistance, according to Ugwueze, will help members prepare for life beyond retirement.
The Local Government Service Commission has given their support to the pension board and local government chairmen, and they have stated that the entrepreneurship and pre-retirement training we will organise for those who intend to retire from the local government service in our State is the most crucial component of the programme.
“We are committed to easing the suffering union members are going through.
This is meant to lessen any suffering that our members may be experiencing both while they are still in the military and after they have retired by providing them with financial help.
He listed several intervention areas, such as training, paying for the children’s school expenses, expanding the enterprises and farms run by the workers, and covering medical expenses and Medicare.
We aim to introduce people to this training within a year of their retirement to help them prepare financially and psychologically so they may enjoy their retirement.
We’ve started off with company support, support for hospital bills, support for school fees, support for building renovations, minibuses and keke that we’ll use to support our lives after work. Perhaps when you retire, you’ll be able to work out full-time.
“Our dear Governor has promised to reduce the poverty index in Enugu State to 0% in his visionary agenda, and what we are doing as a union is in line with that vision,” Ugwueze continued.
He praised Hon. Philip Okoh, chairman of the Udi Council Area, for paying workers’ salaries on time and clearing arrears, and he made a plea to all local government chairmen in the State to support the union in realising its goals fully.
Okoh stated that he will continue to support any efforts made to improve the wellbeing of workers.
