The governorship elections in the states of Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa would not be impacted by the current organised labour protest, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC.
Emanuella Ben-Opara, the head of Imo State INEC’s Department of Voter Education and Publicity, made this statement while discussing the state’s election preparations with reporters in Owerri on Saturday.
She mentioned that while the National Union of Road Transport Workers, or NURTW, is not a part of the labour union, the Commission has already received assurances from them.
According to her, cars that have been rented from the NURTW are present to make it easier to transfer staff and supplies to each voting place.
The chairman of the Department of Voter Education and Publicity in Imo State also revealed that all Registration Area Centres have been turned on in preparation for the Friday night deployment of both sensitive and non-sensitive materials.
Although Ben-Opara disclosed that security services had pinpointed every possible hotspot, he urged locals not to give in to fear.
She claims that during the entire procedure, the security agencies had pledged to provide a favourable atmosphere.
