Senator Mohammed Sani Musa, who represents Niger East Senatorial District, has appealed for support for the ban on open grazing following a recent clash between farmers and herders in the Kwali community of Gwada District, Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State.
Senator Musa made this plea during a visit to the affected community, accompanied by a state government delegation. He described the clash as unfortunate and stressed the importance of supporting the ban on open grazing to find a lasting solution to such conflicts.
Senator Musa expressed concern that this clash occurred while the state government is already allocating significant resources to combat bandit activities in the region.
He urged both farmers and herders to maintain peace, emphasizing that meaningful development can only be achieved in a peaceful environment. Senator Musa also highlighted the establishment of the Ministry of Pastoral and Nomadic Affairs by the governor, encouraging both parties to report their issues to the ministry for resolution.
Umar Rebe Sanda, the Commissioner for Nomadic Affairs, echoed the senator’s call for tolerance and peace, mentioning that the ministry has set up local committees to mediate conflicts and take further action.
The clash in Kwali resulted in several fatalities, underscoring the urgent need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms in the area.
