Support from Northern lawmakers for Nnamdi Kanu’s release sparks controversy. Learn about the mixed reactions and potential impact.
The Federal lawmakers, predominantly those from the North have received criticism from the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) for endorsing requests to liberate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu -the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
As prominent Nigerians, including lawmakers, have joined in calling for the release of the IPOB leader, the demand for his freedom has grown stronger.
Nonetheless, CNG characterized the call as deceitful and criticized lawmakers who supported it for lacking patriotism.
The Coalition expressed willingness to pardon the Southeastern governors and lawmakers who were allegedly supporters of Nnamdi Kanu from the onset, but failed to comprehend why a legislator from the Northern region would align with his agenda.
The statement asserted that the call for Kanu’s freedom was disrespectful towards those who lost their lives due to Nnamdi Kanu’s separatist agenda and a disregard for the Nigerian populace.
It is important to remember that on August 7th, 2017, the Northern Coalition filed a report with the United Nations against Nnamdi Kanu for allegedly committing acts of terrorism against innocent Nigerians.
CNG supported the categorization of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist group.
The group, represented by its National Coordinator Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, stated in a signed statement that they repudiate this act of legislative wrongdoing.
It is surprising to us that House of Representatives members, including those from Northern Nigeria, are advocating for the release of a detained terrorist who is facing charges in a legally authorized court.
The statement is an obvious effort to undermine the Nigerian judiciary and disregard the rule of law. Why did they remain silent when Nnamdi Kanu and his followers were responsible for killing Northerners in eastern Nigeria, both past and present?
“Where were they when he destroyed the properties of Northerners? Were they elected for self-interest or to serve citizens’ interests? It’s disgraceful and disheartening to see a lawmaker from the North contributing to such an injustice.”
The celebration of the killer of their loved ones in the NASS instead of being arrested will only deepen the sense of demoralization among the security operatives.
Although we expected the southeastern legislators, governors, religious and traditional leaders to support Nnamdi Kanu’s reprehensible actions, we vehemently condemn all northern lawmakers who endorsed this betrayal.
“It is stated that we will not allow the blood of our loved ones to be wasted, nor will we let terrorism succeed.”
