A Northern group has criticized former Governor Lamido, accusing him of playing a key role in the rebellion against the PDP in 2024. Explore the political tension and the group’s allegations against Lamido.
The Northern Youths Movement (NYM), a group from northern Nigeria, has criticized Alhaji Sule Lamido, the former Governor of Jigawa State, for his recent remarks about the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Lamido strongly criticized Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), referring to him as a “novice in PDP history” and questioning his whereabouts back in 1999.
In a statement released to DAILY POST on Sunday and signed by Chairman Mallam Ishaya Jato, the NYM reminded Lamido that those he dismissively referred to as children and small boys were actually instrumental in keeping the PDP alive after the 2014 rebellion—a movement in which Lamido himself played significant roles before eventually withdrawing his support.
The youth group pointed out the irony in how those who were children when the PDP was being established have now reached maturity and become fathers to many political descendants, whereas some of the elders from 1998 continue to behave as if they are still children.
The group commented, “It’s not surprising that after serving as a Minister and Governor for eight years, Lamido couldn’t find anyone else in Jigawa State to put forward as the PDP’s governorship candidate besides his own son.”
If, in Lamido’s opinion—who reached the status of political elder at 50 years old—57-year-old Wike is still considered a young man, we wonder how Lamido views himself after an additional 36 years as an elder. Could he now be regarded as a patriarchal figure within the PDP?
They claimed that Lamido had similarly disparaged former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Two years ago, Lamido stated publicly that “Obasanjo was an unknown prisoner when the PDP was formed.” Interestingly, he then advised Obasanjo to refrain from speaking down on others in public.
In 2019, Lamido referred to Atiku as his junior in politics, noting that he served in the House of Representatives back in 1979 while Atiku was still working for Nigerian Customs Services.
While serving as a PDP governor, Lamido frequently criticized President Jonathan and labeled his administration as unsuccessful.
Even while not in office, Lamido continues to criticize President Jonathan.
Consequently, it’s not surprising that since Lamido and others misled Atiku into believing he was the President-In-Waiting well over seven months before the 2023 presidential election—leading to his loss—he has been directing his frustration and anger towards Wike. This is primarily because Wike, along with fellow governors Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi have stood their ground against being treated like children within their own party,” the group further asserted.
remembers that the PDP is still struggling to recover from its defeat in the 2023 presidential election, as a significant leadership crisis has plagued the party since then.
