A North Korean soldier has reportedly defected to South Korea, sparking concerns and tensions along the heavily fortified border between the two nations.

Yonhap news agency reports that a soldier from North Korea has fled and arrived in South Korea.

According to an anonymous military source cited by Yonhap, the soldier crossed the border and was apprehended early on Tuesday in northeastern Goseong county.

According to the information given, the individual who defected was believed to hold the rank of a staff sergeant.

According to an unnamed South Korean defense official cited by Reuters news agency, he was undergoing questioning regarding his reasons for defecting. The official declined to disclose any additional information.

Approximately fourteen days after a resident of North Korea crossed the border in close proximity to the nation’s western coastline, there was a defection.

It is highly dangerous and uncommon to cross the heavily fortified border that divides North and South Korea.

During the year 2017, a few North Korean soldiers defected and among them was an individual who seized the opportunity of dense fog to cross over the demilitarized zone (DMZ).
