NNPP wants to leave the peace pact after the 2023 elections
The New Nigeria Peoples Party, or NNPP, has threatened to stop supporting a peace agreement that was signed in Kano because the police and state government are allegedly trying to scare off party candidates.
The party said that the Kano State Police Command, which works for the state government, had come up with a secret plan to catch NNPP leaders in all 44 local government areas of the state.
This information was provided at a media briefing the NNPP held at its secretariat in Kano. Dr. Baffa Bichi is the NNPP’s senatorial candidate for Kano North.
Mamman Dauda, who is the commissioner of police in Kano, is said to be working with the state government to create a situation that could lead to the postponement of elections in Kano, according to Bichi, who spoke with all of the NNPP senatorial candidates and with Abba Gida Gida, who is running for governor.
He also asserted that the Kano State Police Command had proof of a list of NNPP members who were to be detained.
In order to maintain peace in Kano during and after the elections, Bichi appealed to the Inspector General of Police on behalf of the NNPP stalwarts to immediately redeploy the commissioner of police.
According to him, the NNPP intends to remove its signature from the peace agreement that has already been signed because of the circumstances in Kano.
The NNPP is preparing a nonviolent demonstration in each of the state’s 44 local government areas (LGAs), Bichi said, so that the public would be aware of the actual situation on the ground. Bichi asked all security services to keep a close eye on what was going on in Kano.
Bichi also charged the Kano Police Command with failing to follow court orders against some politicians, saying, “We will soon release the names of those the police are preparing to arrest, and we have good evidence that that list was [put] together by local government chairmen.”
