The New Nigeria Peoples Party’s (NNPP) ongoing leadership crisis has taken a new turn after the party’s new leadership, led by Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major, decided to launch an investigation into the misappropriation of more than N1 billion from the sale of forms to candidates in the general elections of 2023.

The new leadership announced its intention to restructure the party’s infrastructure at all levels nationally in the upcoming days and weeks and requested written complaints from candidates who felt they had been wronged after paying for forms into the party’s account.

This decision was made and made accessible to OBASANJO NEWS24 in a statement made by the Acting National Publicity Secretary, Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq, following a first meeting on Sunday at the Abuja National Secretariat.

The party decided to form a committee to launch an investigation after questioning the reasoning behind the Situation Room’s proximity to the presidential candidate’s home.

According to the statement, the site allowed for significant corruption and manipulation, which resulted in the imposition of candidates.

According to Abdulrasaq, the party also revealed that it had withdrawn from the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it had signed with the Kwankwasiya Movement and The National Movement (TNM), stressing that the ideals of those two organisations did not align with the party’s objectives of inclusivity and openness.

In order to uphold the principles of equity and fairness that the party upholds, the party, according to Abdulrasaq, decided to investigate why other candidates for president were denied the opportunity to purchase ballots and take part in the primary election that it claimed was conducted illegally and resulted in Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

He also urged the party’s countless members and supporters to maintain their composure in the face of what it called the “brazen assault of the Kwankwasiya movement,” whose followers were falsely persuaded to believe the party had been sold to them.

“The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) under Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major held its first meeting today at the Abuja National Secretariat and adopted the following resolutions after reviewing the circumstances caused by the party’s egregious mismanagement over the previous year:

“To carry out a comprehensive investigation into the misuse of well over one billion naira (N1b) received from the sale of applications to candidates between March 2022 to the present. In order to obtain explanations from the party’s presidential candidate, the party’s outgoing chairman, the ousted interim chairman, and the National Secretary, the meeting decided to invite appropriate security agencies to thoroughly review the party’s financial records. This is done to regain the trust of party members and candidates who paid for forms with their hard-earned cash, according to a portion of the statement.
