On Saturday, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) spokesperson, Olaide Shonola reported that a fire erupted at the Akaso 4 Wellhead in Rivers State. The well is managed by Nigerian National Petroleum Company’s (NNPC) 18 Operating Limited.
Reportedly happening on Friday at approximately 11:12 pm, the incident is said to have extended towards the nearby riverbank.
Shonola stated that NNPC 18 Operating Limited has verified the deployment of a prompt response emergency team to safeguard the well, tackle the situation and isolate affected regions by implementing spill containment substances in order to avoid any further spread or pollution of surroundings. Furthermore, they also have plans underway for an immediate onset of oil recovery procedures.
She further stated that a Naval Houseboat was deployed by the company in the affected region and community surveillance had been established to keep an eye on the situation.

Shonola revealed that the cause of the incident is still unknown. However, plans for a collaborative investigation with pertinent parties are underway to identify both its origins and scope of impact.
For a considerable duration, it was observed by her that the Akaso Well 4 has not been functioning.
The NUPRC spokesperson divulged that the blaze at NNPC’s Alakiri Well 9T, which ignited on February 23rd of the year 2024, continues to persist.
Kenyon International West Africa Company, the contractor responsible for handling the situation is encountering difficulties in extinguishing the fire.
Instead of the current heat extraction method being deployed, they are now planning to implement the total oxygen extraction method.
“All equipment fabrication has been completed and the contractor is currently waiting for mobilization from the well owners. Personnel from the contracting team are present on-site to oversee and assess any incidents,” she emphasized.
