Nnamdi Kanu: My Parents Died from the Trauma of Army Attack

IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu claims that the trauma from a military attack led to the death of his parents, as he continues to push for his release and justice.

On Friday, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), recounted how his late parents experienced intense trauma when the Nigerian Army tried to kill him at his residence in Afaraukwu, Abia State.

Kanu mentioned that the trauma from the 2017 attack resulted in his parents, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu and Lolo Ugoeze Sally Nmeme Okwu Kanu, passing away five years ago.

In September 2017, troops involved in Operation Python Dance entered Kanu’s home in Afaraukwu; however, the IPOB leader managed to escape and fled to Europe.

Reflecting on his parents, Kanu expressed sorrow that those accountable for their deaths remain unpunished.

The leader of IPOB revealed this information during his regular meeting with his legal team at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Kanu, released a statement that said: “Following today’s routine visit with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, he has directed his legal team to release the following message:”

Five years ago today, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of my dear parents, their Royal Majesties Eze Sir Israel Okwu Kanu (JP) and Lolo Ugoeze Sally Nmeme Okwu Kanu. They endured severe trauma from which they never recovered. Tragically, 28 other innocent individuals also lost their lives because the Nigerian Army launched an unprovoked and deadly attack on our royal residence with the sole intention of taking my life.

Having survived, they swiftly labeled IPOB as a terrorist organization to conceal their atrocious acts and mislead the unsuspecting public—a falsehood that continues even now.

The greatest way to honor is by always remembering what happened to them and all those who sacrificed their lives defending freedom on our home soil.

The murderers based in Abuja and their accomplices in Igboland, who orchestrated this heinous massacre of innocent people, continue to spread lies against my legitimate right to peacefully advocate for Biafra—a right recognized by Nigerian law.
