President Joe Ajaero of the NLC has implored President Bola Tinubu to attend to the concerns of individuals intending to stage a protest.
In a statement, Ajaero emphasized the importance of communication between the government and protest organizers.
“Under the burden of economic policies that have worsened poverty and deprivation, millions of Nigerians are suffering,” he stated.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), around 133 million Nigerians are living below the poverty line, while acute hunger has affected 32 million people in just one year as reported by International Rescue Committee (IRC). The condition is worsened by high levels of unemployment and underemployment which have pushed numerous families towards a precarious situation.
He included: “The citizens of Nigeria should be able to express themselves without being labeled as mere political opponents.”
During these difficult times, it is crucial to engage in constructive conversation rather than conflict. Those in positions of power must display empathy and comprehension.
He highlighted that citizens’ frustration is being fueled by government policies, such as high hikes in fuel prices, electricity tariffs and essential service user fees.
