NLC and TUC respond to the Federal Government’s decision to pay N70,000 as the new minimum wage, addressing its potential impact on workers.
In response to the Federal Government’s adoption of the new N70,000 minimum salary, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called on state and private governments to adopt the same wage structure.
NLC spokesperson Benson Upah and TUC Deputy President Tommy Etim both underlined in different interviews conducted in Abuja how crucial it is for others to follow the Federal Government’s example.
Upah responded, “Yes, I think so,” when questioned about the move. We request that more organizations follow this lead.

Etim continued, “There is no moral justification for anyone to postpone the payment of the minimum wage because the Federal Government’s committee on consequential adjustments has already published a template. We now suggest that everyone else do the same and start paying the new minimum wage.
Not everyone, though, is pleased with the pay hike. A grade 12 civil servant expressed dissatisfaction, pointing out that the raise falls short of addressing the financial difficulties that many Nigerians encounter.
“This pay raise that I am witnessing is insufficient in light of the challenges we have seen over the past year and the nation’s present economic downturn. I believe that we have been duped. Did we really wait months for this? the officer said.
