The declaration attributed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, that if elected president of Nigeria next year, he will no longer subsidize the price of petroleum goods, has drawn criticism from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.

John Ushie, who used to be the chairman of NLC in Cross River State, spoke on behalf of NLC/TUC and said that the union is still against getting rid of subsidies.

During the Labour Party campaign, he stated in Calabar, “We are fully opposed to the withdrawal of fuel subsidies.”

“For any government to even consider that is very wrong.”

Before considering subsidy withdrawal, the government should first fix all of the nation’s refineries. Let the government consider domestic crude oil refinement.

Also, people who called into Calabar’s Sparkling FM radio station accused Tinubu and said that he was against reducing subsidies when Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was president.
