The decision of the Federal Government to increase electricity tariff has been criticized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as insensitive.
Despite calls for its reversal, the government insisted on a 240 per cent hike in tariff for power consumers in the band ‘A’ category.
The government also stated that the subsidised power pricing regime would be temporary, with a plan to achieve a full cost-reflective tariff within three years.
The NLC expressed their opposition to the tariff hike, stating that it is unpopular and will have negative consequences.
They argued that high power tariffs do not support manufacturing, even in developed countries.
The NLC also accused the government of not being in charge, suggesting that the World Bank and the IMF are the ones driving this policy. Manufacturers and organized labor have also voiced their opposition to the tariff hike.
