The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, was charged by the Presidency on Thursday of engaging in partisan politics in Imo State in advance of the governorship election scheduled for this coming Saturday.

The statement was made while criticising Ajaero’s assertion that he was battling for state workers, according to President Bola Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Ajaero’s meeting with Athan Achuonu, the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate for the state’s governorship, prompted Onanuga to respond.

In an X post, Onanuga bemoaned the fact that Ajaero’s false claims of fighting for workers were believed by the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Athan Achuonu, the governorship candidate for the Imo State Labour Party, and Joe Ajaero, the partisan president of the NLC, are shown here in a cheerful mood, according to a post made online by user @DavidsOffor. The reason this same Ajaero shut down Imo State was his great desire to see the unpopular Achuonu win this Saturday’s election.

It is imperative that all Imbolites stand up to the arrogance of the labour union leadership. It’s very terrible that Ajaero is trying to stir up sympathy for the Governor by putting Imo State without light for days at a time, without gasoline, with teachers and health personnel without tools, etc.

It is therefore unclear why Ajaero is choosing to represent solely his native state of Imo State, where the off-season polls are only being held. Many hardships have been brought to the state by his presidency of the NLC. This is the lowest NLC has ever been brought.

In response, Onanuga posted: “Joe Ajaero, the Labour candidate for governor of Imo, is engaging in personal politics.” Additionally, he asserts that he is standing out for all state workers. Amazingly, TUC fell for the hoax.
