The NLC and the TUC have formed a joint committee to oversee compliance, the Labour leader also revealed.
The proposed statewide strike is scheduled to begin on October 3 and has been approved by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State.
Following a combined leadership meeting of the NLC and the TUC on Friday at the NLC Secretariat in Port Harcourt, the state NLC chairman, Alex Agwanwor, issued the order.
Vice Chairman Christopher Amadi of the TUC served as the delegation’s leader at the meeting.
Agwanwor stated that, absent any adjustments, all facilities and activities run by NLC and TUC members in Rivers State will be completely shut down in accordance with the directives of their National Executive Councils.
Contrary to some perceptions, the planned strike, according to the NLC Chairman, is an effort to free Nigeria and its workers from the current economic suffering brought on by the elimination of gasoline subsidies.
The NLC and the TUC have formed a joint committee to oversee the state’s adherence to the scheduled strike, the Labour leader also revealed.
He issued a warning that negligent affiliate unions would face appropriate sanctions.
Alex Agwanwor further defended their intended course of action by claiming that President Bola Tinubu’s elimination of the gasoline subsidy did not improve worker welfare because the price of products and services is still skyrocketing.
He begged with the populace and Civil Society Groups to support the Labour Centres’ intended action.
