The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have criticized the failure of the power sector privatization and called for its immediate reversal.

This demand was made during a protest in Abeokuta against the increase in electricity tariff and removal of power sector subsidies by the Federal Government.

Members of the NLC and TUC sealed off the office of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) during the demonstration.

The TUC chairman for Ogun State, Akeem Lasisi, expressed disappointment with the Nigerian Energy Regulation Commission (NERC) for raising energy rates without consulting organized labor or other stakeholders.

He emphasized the negative impact on workers, whose salaries remain stagnant despite rising costs in the country.

Lasisi called for the reversal of the privatization policy and urged NERC to focus on regulating the distribution companies (DISCOs) instead of increasing electricity tariffs.

The state’s NLC chairman, Hameed Benco, also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and reverse the tariff increment.
