Simon Lalong, the minister of labour and employment, has pleaded with the NLC leadership to call off the strike.

On Tuesday, October 3, the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) will start an ongoing strike.

This came after a joint press conference held by the union’s two heads on Tuesday (today) in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Additionally, the unions requested that state chapters organise for nationwide protests.

According to information obtained by Channels Television, the leaders of the two labour unions have settled their disputes that led only the NLC to go on a two-day warning strike without the involvement of the TUC.

The meeting is taking place virtually, according to the notice of meeting signed by the NLC Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja.

Simon Lalong, the minister of labour and employment, has urged the NLC leadership to call off the strike and reassured them that the federal government is committed to resolving their problems.

The minister also mentioned that one of the main demands made by the NLC at their most recent meeting—the release of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport workers’ leadership—had been satisfied.

Workers’ unions were encouraged to give the administration some more time to address other issues in a statement signed by Olajide Oshundu, the spokesperson for the ministry.

To pressure the government to address the widespread suffering of Nigerians, particularly workers, the NLC went on a two-day warning strike on Tuesday, September 5, and Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the Federal Government failed to address the suffering and other socioeconomic hardships caused by the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), more commonly known as petrol, and the two sides began a joint press briefing at 3 p.m. on Tuesday to announce an indefinite nationwide strike.
