On September 20, the newly appointed nine Justices of the Court of Appeal will be sworn in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
The Main Court auditorium of the Supreme Court of Nigeria will host the inauguration of the new Appellate Court Justices.
The new Court of Appeal Justices will be sworn in by the Chief Justice by 11:00 am, according to a statement made on Sunday by the Supreme Court’s Director of Press and Information, Dr. Festus Akande.
Hannatu Azumi Laja-Balogun from Kaduna State, who was appointed a High Court Judge on May 24, 1999; Binta Fatima Zubairu from Kaduna State, who was appointed a High Court Judge on October 31, 2001; and Peter Chudi Obiora from Anambra State, who was sworn in as a High Court Judge on January 17, 2005, are the new appellate court Justices.
Others include Justices Okon Efreti Abang of Akwa Ibom State, appointed to the position of High Court Judge on June 22, 2009; Asma’u Musa Mainoma of the Federal Capital Territory, appointed to the same position on February 1, 2013; Lateef Adebayo Ganiyu of Oyo State, appointed to the position on June 26, 2014; and Jane Esienanwan Iyang of Cross River State, sworn in to the position on February 12, 2015.
Hadiza Rabiu Shagari of Sokoto State, appointed to the High Court Bench on February 12, 2015, and Paul Ahmed Bassi of Borno State, appointed to the High Court on July 14, 2017, make up the remaining members.
On Sunday, September 3, 2023, Justice Amina Adamu Augie reached the obligatory retirement age of 70 years old. As a result, she will formally leave the Supreme Court’s bench on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
Due to the Court’s yearly vacation, which ended on Friday, September 15, 2023, the traditional farewell court session in her honour that was supposed to take place on September 3 was postponed.
On November 7th, 2016, Justice Amina Augie was sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice. She earned a law degree with a Second Class Upper Division from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1977 and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1978.
Justice Augie’s departure has left the Supreme Court with 11 Justices instead of the 22 required by the Constitution.
Olukayode Ariwoola, Musa Dattijo, Kudirat Motomori Kekere-Ekun, John Inyang Okoro, Uwani Abba Aji, Garba Lawal, and Helen Morenikeji Ogunwumiju are the remaining justices on the bench of the Apex Court. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, or CJN, is also a member.
The remaining individuals are Emmanuela Akomaye Agim, Ibrahim Saulawa, Adamu Jauro, Tijjani Abubakar, and.
It will be noted that Supreme Court Justice Centus Chima Nweze passed away on July 14, 2023.
