Niger’s Mohamed Bazoum remains defiant despite being detained, showing resilience in the face of political challenges.

General Tiani, with the backing of the army, overthrew Mohamed Bazoum in a military coup one year ago and asserted control over Niger. The military authorities have since restricted liberties, halted political activities, and suppressed dissenting voices to consolidate their hold on power.

There is no announcement regarding the timeline for a return to civilian rule, and Niger has moved away from their Western allies while establishing closer relations with Russia.

Bazoum and his wife, Hadiza, have been confined to the presidential residence since October and cut off from the rest of society. However, they receive regular medical visits from Bazoum’s doctor.

Being constantly watched, he doesn’t possess a phone while his physician attends to him with food and reading materials.

Bazoum remains resolute in his decision not to step down, even with the prevailing circumstances. He derives comfort from reading a wide range of books ranging from renowned literary figures like Shakespeare and Tolstoy, all the way up to modern-day writers such as Romain Gary. Additionally, he indulges himself with political literature including works by Dominique Moïsi titled “The Triumph of Emotions.”

Despite being weakened by a bout of malaria in the spring, Bazoum demonstrates unwavering resolve. Despite having his presidential immunity lifted and facing the possibility of standing trial, he chooses not to step down from office.
