Mutuwa, who was born in America but pledged his allegiance to Nigeria, displayed great determination as he defeated South African wrestler Justin VAN ZYL with a 16-8 pin-fall victory.
This will be Mutuwa’s first-ever Olympic appearance, and he joins the list of Nigerian wrestlers representing the country in Paris.
However, Harrison Onovwiomobohwo, competing in the 86kg category, missed out on an Olympic slot after a 4-4 points criteria decision went in favor of Australian wrestler Jayden A. Lawrence.
In another disappointing turn of events, Braveman Oyeinkeperemo, competing in the 74kg category, lost 2-10 to Bacar Ndum of Guinea-Bissau in the semi-final.
This added to the evening’s disappointment for the Nigerian male freestyle wrestlers.
Prior to this, Simeon Enozumini and Izolo Stephen were also unable to advance to the semi-finals in the men’s freestyle category after losing their respective round matches.
