Senator Ndume criticizes Nigerians for celebrating those who steal public funds, calling for a change in mindset.
Ali Ndume, the senator for Borno South senatorial district, has once again expressed fresh concerns about the ongoing issue of corruption in Nigeria. He lamented that the country continues to honor individuals who embezzle public funds.
Ndume conveyed this during an interactive session with journalists in Kano on Sunday.
He emphasized how societal values have played a role in normalizing ill-gotten wealth.
The lawmaker conveyed disappointment that in Nigeria, individuals who embezzle public funds are not only unchallenged but also celebrated for their wealth.

While comparing Nigeria’s situation with that of developed nations, the Borno senator remarked that whereas wealth is scrutinized abroad, it is admired unquestioningly in Nigeria.
Ndume shared how people often admire, rather than question, those who suddenly flaunt their newfound wealth.
The senator further revealed that his earlier efforts to propose legislation addressing unexplained wealth in Nigeria have not been successful.
Ndume highlighted the urgent problem of hunger in the country, calling on both the government and citizens to prioritize agriculture as a key strategy to fight food insecurity.
“Our primary challenge in this country is corruption. So far, we lack legislation that can effectively address the issue of corruption either proactively or reactively.”
In developed countries, individuals often scrutinize the origins of one’s wealth; however, in Nigeria, displaying ill-gotten riches tends to earn admiration.
“He lamented, ‘If you see someone in our system, particularly in politics or government, who is not corrupt, they are fortunate to be God-fearing. Otherwise, it’s only in Nigeria that you can steal money and walk freely while being celebrated.'”
