In Nigeria, today is Armed Forces Remembrance Day, a yearly ceremony to honour the nation’s soldiers and dead heroes.

The annual celebration, which takes place on January 15, also recognises Nigerian Civil War and World War I and II warriors. It is a day set aside for thoughtful consideration of the value of the armed forces to the nation.

While Armistice Day, which honours the end of World War I, is observed on November 11 every year, it is also known as Armed Forces Remembrance Day in many other countries.

However, the date was modified to reflect the formal restoration of Nigeria’s unity after the Biafran secessionists’ surrender on January 15, 1970, which marked the official end of the Nigerian Civil War.

As the special guest of honour at the occasion, President Buhari would lay a wreath in memory of the fallen warriors even though prayers would be offered in both Christian and Islamic traditions.

After that, Professor Osinbajo and other participants will turn and pay their respects to the troops who gave their lives defending the nation’s territorial integrity.

Governors are anticipated to honour the nation’s fallen heroes during events that are slated to take place during the anniversary in a number of the federation’s states.
