General Gowon encouraged Nigerians to refrain from interfering with the courts’ ability to execute their jobs.
The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal hearing will begin on Monday, May 8, and a former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has asked Nigerians to accept the court’s rulings as final when they are made.
This was his presentation at a symposium on Thursday in honor of Justice Chike Idigbe, a former justice of the Supreme Court.
Gowon also asked Nigerians to refrain from interfering with the judiciary, as it is essential to maintaining national cohesion.
Justice Alfa Belgore, the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Minister Babatunde Fashola of Works and Housing, Minister of State for Budget and National Planning Clem Agba, and a few Senior Advocates of Nigeria are also present at the occasion.
After the presidential election on February 25, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress was declared the winner by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu on March 1. This decision was based on the fact that Tinubu’s party received the majority of the votes cast.
Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), who received 6.1 million votes, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 6.9 million votes, and 15 other candidates were all defeated by his 8.8 million vote total.
Atiku and Obi, however, are contesting the outcome and have both filed a petition asking for the election to be declared invalid or to be declared their respective winners.
