Guinness World Records (GWR) has officially recognised Nigerian woman Helen Williams as the new owner of the record for the longest homemade wig.
The British reference book celebrated the achievement of the Lagos-based wigmaker in a blog post on Tuesday.
The GWR states that the wig is 351.28 metres (1,152 feet 5 inches) long.
It was also reported that Helen paid N2 million (£2,031; $2,493) for the wig over the course of 11 days.
The post states, “Helen Williams from Lagos, Nigeria has set a new record for the longest handmade wig, stretching an amazing 351.28 metres (1,152 feet 5 inches).”
The procedure entailed building an underlay for a bicycle helmet out of black cloth and wig-cap netting.
Helen used six thousand hair clips, twelve cans of hairspray, thirty-five jars of hair adhesive, and one thousand bundles of hair to finish the hairpiece.
Obtaining the supplies needed for a project this size proved difficult. Drawing on her eight years of experience as a professional wigmaker, Helen said that having this knowledge was essential to getting over challenges.
“She has coached hundreds of students, made thousands of wigs, and consistently produced between fifty and three hundred wigs per week throughout her career.
Finding an appropriate place to arrange the wig in a straight line for precise measuring proved to be a major challenge during the procedure.
Helen finally decided on the Lagos – Abeokuta Motorway, a long route that connects Lagos and Abeokuta, after considering a number of locations, none of which were suitable.
“The wig, which is now proudly kept at Helen’s office, is a tribute to her commitment and inventiveness. She invites guests to view the amazing work whenever they like.
After eight years of expertise, Helen, a skilled wigmaker, stated, “At some point, I felt exhausted.”
But my family and friends gave me encouragement. I kept my concentration since I did not want to disappoint them. The result is the world’s longest handcrafted wig,” she continued.
