The incident occurred on March 21, with Chidozie’s wife, Keaiirra Shavoiyae, who is two years older, claiming that she acted in self-defense when she shot him during an argument in front of their two young children.
Following the shooting, Chidozie was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital, where he remained on life support for 18 days before succumbing to the complications arising from his spinal injuries.
Despite being charged with aggravated assault, Shavoiyae has not faced murder charges as of yet, pending further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Chidozie’s death.
Shavoiyae alleged that she shot Chidozie out of fear for her life after he followed her into their bedroom during the argument, prompting her to grab a pistol and fire at him.
While the police report confirmed the sequence of events leading to the shooting, it did not disclose whether Chidozie, a bodybuilder, had physically harmed his wife prior to her resorting to using a firearm in self-defense.
Chidozie sustained gunshot wounds to his arm, chest, and torso, ultimately being left to die on the bedroom floor as a result of the tragic altercation.
Shavoiyae was discovered by the police with the children in a nearby parking lot after witnesses contacted the authorities to report her frantic behavior while seeking assistance.
Acquaintances of the couple mentioned that they had never witnessed any violent behavior between them and were taken aback by how an argument had tragically resulted in a fatality.
Chidozie’s family, who had prayed for his recovery during his time in the hospital, is now attempting to raise $70,000 to repatriate his body to Nigeria for burial, fulfilling his wish to return to his home country.
Expressing their grief, the family stated that Chidozie’s passing has created a significant void in the lives of those who knew and loved him, highlighting his role as a dedicated father, beloved son, and dear friend to many.
They further emphasized that Chidozie’s compassionate nature, contagious laughter, and unwavering love for his family will always be cherished and remembered by those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.
Shavoiyae, Chidozie’s wife, has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in court on May 23, while their children are under the care of another family.
