Nigerian Government to Collaborate with UNODC on Correctional Service Reform

The commitment of the Federal Government to collaborate with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in upgrading Nigeria’s Correctional Service has been reiterated.

During a courtesy visit by the Country Representative of UNODC in Nigeria, Dr Oliver Stolpe, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized the importance of implementing the inmate audit project to achieve the desired transformation of the correctional service.

The minister highlighted the government’s aim to make the correctional centers more reformative and less destructive, ensuring that the dignity of the inmates is maintained while their freedom of movement is restricted.

He expressed gratitude to UNODC for their valuable partnership and interventions. In response, Dr Stolpe updated the minister on ongoing projects and sought his input for their success.
