Nigerian Government Settles ₦85bn and $54m ECOWAS Levy Obligations

The Nigerian government fulfills its ECOWAS financial obligations by clearing ₦85 billion and $54 million in levies, reaffirming its commitment to regional integration and development.

The Nigerian Government has completely fulfilled its ECOWAS levy obligations, totaling N85 billion and $54 million, for the year 2023 through July 2024.

Dr. Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, made this announcement at the opening of the 66th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, which took place in Abuja’s Presidential Villa Banquet Hall.

Touray disclosed that Nigeria has fully paid its community levy through 2023 for the first time in 19 years.

He stated, “The funds were disbursed on Friday, December 13, 2024. This payment highlights the leadership and dedication of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, along with the government and citizens of Nigeria to the ECOWAS community. Personally speaking, it signifies a vote of confidence in ECOWAS under my leadership since 2022. My colleagues and I are truly grateful.”

In his opening remarks, President Tinubu stressed that the strength of ECOWAS resides in the unity among its member states and highlighted the shared vision that inspired the community’s formation.

He expressed that the world is facing a range of challenges, including crises in Sudan and the Middle East, violent extremism, and environmental issues. Many of these challenges have affected our region as well, highlighting the importance of collaboration.

The 66th session convened regional leaders to address ongoing issues and emphasize the significance of collaboration in tackling the challenges confronting West Africa.
