The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, was recently presented with two looted artifacts by the Director-General of NCMM, Mr. Olugbile Holloway, in Benin City. These artifacts, bronze and wooden Royal Stools (Ekete), were returned by Germany and initially kept in the custody of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments in 2022.
The historical significance of these artifacts dates back to the reign of Oba Eresoyen and Oba Esigie several centuries ago, when they were originally made. They were looted from the Oba’s Palace during the British punitive expedition under Oba Ovoranmwen Nogbasi’s reign.
Holloway, during the presentation, pledged to collaborate closely with the Benin Royal Court to uplift and showcase Edo heritage. He highlighted the gradual return of Benin bronzes and other artworks looted from Nigeria by colonial powers, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to creating a suitable space for appreciating these artworks.
The Oba of Benin expressed gratitude to the German Government, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the NCMM leadership for their efforts in returning these artifacts. He offered prayers and danced joyfully to traditional Benin renditions, symbolizing the significance of this historic moment.
