The conditions set forth by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for the resumption of his trial have been met with opposition from the Federal Government.

During the court hearing at the Federal High Court Abuja, Kanu expressed his willingness to expedite the prosecution of the charges against him, provided that his specified conditions are fulfilled.

Through his legal representative Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu outlined three key conditions that needed to be satisfied before the trial could proceed, including the restoration of his earlier granted bail to adequately prepare for his defense.

Kanu argued that the revocation of his bail was unjustified, as it was based on false and fraudulent claims made by the Federal Government.

Additionally, he requested the cancellation of the arrest warrant issued against him due to allegations of bail jumping and fleeing the country, as well as unrestricted access for his lawyer to meet with him as required by law.

The IPOB leader emphasized his readiness to undergo an accelerated trial once these conditions are met, while the Federal Government, represented by Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, opposed the conditions as frivolous, vexatious, irritating, and baseless.

Awomolo contended that since the court had previously denied Kanu’s bail application, it could not reverse its decision, suggesting that Kanu’s only recourse would be to appeal the rejection of his bail request.

The legal proceedings are ongoing before Justice Binta Nyako, as the dispute over the conditions set by Kanu continues to unfold in the courtroom.
